Without his help all of this would have been much more difficult and perhaps impossible. Anyone who uses our data owes him a debt of gratitude. And thanks to our spouses, who were not just tolerant but enthusiastically supportive of this rather nutty project. This project, and all of its results, is only our fault.
We well, Jim K, mostly paid for everything ourselves, and we did not receive any kind of sponsorship or remuneration from anyone. We did all the work. We used products we were either familiar with, or because they were what was available, and mentioning them by name does not constitute an endorsement of any kind. Furthermore, the data is provided purely for entertainment purposes - to better facilitate arguments over what ammo or caliber or gun is "best.
And if you think you could do better, feel free to spend the money and do the work and publish your own results. Or not. Your choice.

PeaceOfficer likes this. Last edited by 5pins; at AM. Thanks for the great write-up! It seems that the testing through heavy clothing did not produce the best of results. What clothing did you use in the testing?
Did you ever test these bullets in water jugs, and was there any correlation between the water jug tests and your gel test results? The only V-crown testing I did was in sig with my own loads, and in water jugs. I have never included any heavy clothing in the testing.Being made for seventy some countries it has since been designated as the 9mm NATO.
The difference being that the 9mm NATO operates at a somewhat higher pressure than the original 9mm Luger. This also happens to be the motto for DWM. The 9mm Luger should not be confused with the 9mm Browning Short also known as. These three cartridges are not interchangeable.
This being a somewhat common pistol and similar barrel lengths and manual of operation for many of the 9mm Luger autoloaders I figured it would be an ideal platform for the ballistic test. That also gives me the chance to shoot a lot of different defensive rounds through the Omega and see how it functions. I started the test with my friend and fellow gun writer Clinton Jamieson.
Clinton was kind enough to donate a large portion of the test ammunition and lend a hand with this and the CZ test. In keeping with the same parameters as all of the other ballistic tests setting up the chronograph in front of the ballistic gel about ten feet away. Getting an average velocity of each round, then measuring penetration through bare gel, penetration through three layers of heavy cloth over the gel.
9mm vs. .40 caliber: How do the cartridges stack up?
Each round was removed from the gel after measuring the depth and checked for weight retention and expansion. Top is through 3 layers and bottom is bare gel. You can see the exit holes on the other photo.
This is an expansion tank like you would find above your water heater. As you see, the ARX had no trouble penetrating this mild steel tank. As far as the ballistic gel, it was a spiraled wound channel, think of a drill.
I will be totally honest, I am not a huge fan of the 9mm Luger round. Now before I get a lot of hate mail, shot placement, the dead is dead, and all that, this is my personal opinion and in no way affected the outcome of the ballistic test.
After the test was over though I will admit my eyes have been opened a bit on the 9mm Luger.Redcat gen 8 parts
The data shows modern bullets, such as the one Hornady has designed, coupled with the right propellant charge can be a very viable defensive round. The surprise of the day was the gr Speer Gold Dot. It completely failed to expand when shot through the three layers. You can see the recovered round on the far left, with the cavity still full of cloth. That was a big disappointment for me as I am a fan of the Gold Dots. Consistent with the. Hornady and Winchester were once again at the top of the performers.
The Critical Defense especially as it expanded well and penetrated but had very little recoil. It worked as designed.
The PDX1 preformed very well expanding and penetrating deep. Based on the results of this ballistic test I have rethunk my position on the 9mm Luger as a viable defensive cartridge. SIG Sauer Ammunition. Winchester Ammunition. We'll also give you a breakdown of how we came to choose these picks. For those of you who can't wait, here's a preview of our top picks for best 9mm ammo for self-defense:.
Federal gr HST. Winchester gr Ranger T-Series. Blazer Brass FMJ. American Eagle. Though we'll briefly touch on it below, you can learn why hollow point ammunition is preferred for self-defense in our " Hollow Point vs Full Metal Jacket " guide. All shots were fired about 10 feet away. Before jumping into the picks, we should point out that hollow-point ammunition is far more expensive than FMJ range ammo. In my opinion, it's not a place to go cheap, as the performance of this ammo may be used to save your life.
With that in mind, we didn't factor price into our considerations too much. Ideally though, you would be able to occasionally shoot the hollow-point ammunition you plan to use for concealed carry at the range. This allows you to ensure your handgun can handle it and keeps you confident shooting this ammo. Lastly, 9mm self-defense ammo is less readily available than FMJ; so you may need to check around multiple websites if your choice is out of stock.
This ammo is regularly available, has the second-largest expansion on our list, and the second-highest velocity. This nickel-plated brass ammunition has become my go-to for concealed carry and 9mm defensive purposes. They also make this in grbut its gel test statistics aren't as favorable. This will cause less wear on your pistols, but at the cost of bullet expansion and velocity. Unfortunately, these seem to less often be stocked, but they were the best performing ammo in terms of bullet expansion and are in the sweet spot in terms of penetration.
I've only shot one box of these, but had no issues, for what that's worth. Being gr, they do have a lower velocity than the lighter rounds.
For range ammo, I look for cheap and reliable brass-cased ammunition, as brass causes less wear to your pistols see brass vs steel ammo.Independence 9mm FMJ ammo test
I'd also highly recommend buying it in bulk online, as you can save substantially on a price per round basis. For those that don't shoot often, it's still a good idea, as ammo lasts a very long time when stored correctly.
Prices accurate at time of publishing. Blazer Brass Grain is my choice for the best 9mm practice ammo, as it's mostly what I use at the range. It took thousands of round before having my first potential ammo-related malfunction, but I didn't even investigate too closely. In other words, this could have been a malfunction related to the gun. This stuff is some of the cheapest brass ammo, while still being VERY dependable. You can also find it for around the same price in Grain.
While writing this article, I decided to check and see what brass-cased options I could find for even cheaper than the ammo I usually shoot. Though I haven't shot this myself, I just bought 1, rounds to test after reading the reviews.
It has 5 stars in over reviews, with many recent reviews praising it. I'll update this with my experience, but it seems to be the current cheapest 9mm ammo that's high quality. As FYI, chronograph results of single, 5-shot strings of various.
Thanks for the info. FYI for anyone that that reads the comment above. Please consult a published reloading manual for reloading recipes. Typos can and do happen so it's always best to verify any reloading recipes you pick up on the internet against a published reloading manual.
Do you have data on JHPs? I've done a few tests. You can find them on this page listing all my tests. Pt Max. Photobucket blinked first. Hi Bruce, Glad to see the pics are back!! Pistol Specs:. The video below documents my entire test from range testing to bullet recovery.
Direct Link to Video on YouTube. In the picture below you can see the start of a typical wound channel and stretch cavity. With a FMJ bullet, I didn't expect to see much more than a temporary stretch cavity of uniform height through the first several inches of travel until the bullet slowed. What we got was a uniform stretch cavity for about 3 inches, then an expansion bubble, followed by a series of waves. Finally the stretch cavity settles down again into a normal pattern.
My theory is the expansion bubble was caused by the bullet tumbling degrees.
Sig V-Crown 9mm in Clear Ballistics gel.
The temporarily larger bullet surface area, caused by tumbling, registered as a temporarily larger stretch cavity. I believe the wave pattern immediately after the bubble was caused by the cupped base of the bullet as it progressed base-first down the wound channel.
Energy loss was so great at this point, the remainder of the wound channel actually appears to be normal. There may be other more exotic aka expensive boutique ammo brands that have a heavier bullet or faster velocity, but they are tagged as. One thing I did learn was that my fear of gross over-penetration with. Bare gel is an optimum test bed. Real world exterior and interior barriers will all do their part to leech energy from the bullet as it travels.
If I was going to experience over-penetration with FMJ ammunition, this one should have over-penetrated. The 2. My theory here is that once the bullet turned degrees, it was weight forward and most probably turned a few degrees less than a perfect This caused the bullet to track in the direction that the bullet base was facing.
I stop short of making recommendations, but I will say that the FMJ camp sure does look a whole lot better to me after this test. This test should not be considered an endorsement or recommendation for the product s tested. All tests represent actual performance in ballistics testing media. Terminal performance in all other media will show different results. It is up to each individual to make their own personal decision on which specific ammunition to use for their needs.
